Tomakomai Experimental Forest
Organization
Tomakomai Experimental Forest Station, Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, Hokkaido University
Research Theme
Clarify the mechanism that maintain the biodiversity, and the function of the diversity for the ecosystem on the cool-temperate forest.
Site Outline
Tomakomai Experimental Forest (TOEF) is situated in the southwestern part of Hokkaido at the northern part of Tomakomai city (42o43′ N, 141o36′ E). It has 2,715ha area, approximately 1/20 part of whole Tomakomai city.
TOEF consists of mature deciduous broad-leaved forests (dominated by Quercus crispula, Acer mono, Tilia japonica), secondary deciduous broad-leaved forest, and manmade coniferous forest, either of which covers about 1/3 of the whole area. The some of secondary forests formed after unsuccessful afforestation, although some of them formed after clear-cutting or wind disturbance. The grounds are covered mainly with 5-10cm depth immature soil that originated from volcanic gravels, which largely affect the forest vegetation at this area.
