Site Outline
This site is located in northern Hokkaido, and consists of Teshio (44o 53′ 52″ – 45o 06′ 01″ N, 141o 56′ 02″ – 142o 10′ 21″ E), Nakagwa (44o 43′ 30″ – 44o 54′ 10″ N, 142o 01′ 28″ – 142o 18′ 44″ E) and Uryu Experimental Forests (44o 03′ 10″ – 44o 28′ 42″ N, 142o 01′ 14″ – 142o 19′ 33″ E). Their area is 226, 194, 248 km2, respectively (total = 667 km2). The climate in this region is characterized as one of the largest snowfall and coldest climate in winter. The dominant vegetation is natural cool-temperate mixed forest (including Glehn’s spruce (Picea glehnii), Sakhalin fir (Abies Sachalinensis), Mongolian oak (Quercus crispula), Erman’s birch (Betula ermanii), Painted maple (Acer mono) and so on) with partly Glehn’s spruce swamp forest, riparian forest, various type of wetland, pure stand of Glehn’s spruce on the serpentine rock, secondary forest after the forest fire, plantation and so on. The headquarter office of this site is located under the Northern Forestry Research and Development Office in Nayoro city.
