Research Theme
Understanding the influences of forest harvesting to the water cycle and the material cycle by a paired-watershed method
Site Outline
The Fukuroyamasawa Experimental Watershed (35o12’N, 140o06’E, elevation 124-227 m) is located in the University Forest in Chiba, the University of Tokyo, Japan. Geologically, the area consists of marine deposits from the Neocene period covered with brown forest soil. Two adjacent, paired, steep watersheds (watersheds A and B) were established in the Fukuroyamasawa Experimental Watershed. Watersheds A and B have areas of 0.80 and 1.09 ha, respectively. Cryptomeria japonica and some Chamaecyparis obtusa were planted at a density of ca. 4400/ha in both watersheds in 1929. Watershed B was clear-cut in spring 1999, and young trees were planted in 2000.
